So my wife and I are headed into Brooklyn to go visit the Botanical Gardens with my wife's brother and his fiancee ("Sara").
We're on the train early on a Saturday morning so it's pretty empty. A few benches down and across the train is a homeless (addict) guy asleep on the bench.
Sara had never really been exposed to homeless people, much less up close and personal. They are very much not city people. At one point on the trip the train came to a pretty abrupt stop and a glass tube (crack pipe) fell from the homeless guy's pocket.
After explaining to Sara what it was she asked the most unexpected question...
"Should we wake him?"

Best.Directions.Ever
I'm navigating the Columbus circle station mess when I finally find the downtown 1 platform.
There's a group of European travelers scanning a subway map. Realizing they have no idea what they're doing they stop a guy in a business suit and ask in a thick accent -
"How do we get to Kennedy airport?"
The guy obviously recognized their accent and broke out into their language. They had a quick conversation in a tongue I didn't understand.
Toward the end of the conversation I caught one word in English - "Taxi" as he pointed to the staircase leading out and handed them a few $20s as he said his goodbye, obviously intending that they not spend their last few hours in NYC in the subway. They happily accepted and booked out of there.

Ewwww x 2
Headed to work today uptown on the A train I saw something slightly disturbing....A toddler was licking the vertical pole you (and everyone else on the subway) use to hold on to.
Realizing what was going on, the mother promptly stopped the kid, commenting -
"That's disgusting -- I don't want to put my hand where you've been licking."
